Fish River Canyon
Located in the southwestern part of the country, the Fish River Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the world. (The largest being the Grand Canyon). There is a lot of debate as to whether or not this is the second-largest canyon in the world, and most of the arguments seem to hinge on how one actually measures the ’size’ of a canyon! Regardless of its position in the world of big canyons, the Fish River Canyon is breathtaking in its immensity. Around 160 km in length and reaching a depth in excess of 500 meters, it is one of the main tourist attractions in the south of the country. The canyon is part of the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and is an excellent area for hiking. The Fish River Hiking trail is one of the most famous hikes in Southern Africa. It covers a distance of 86km at the bottom of the canyon, over 5 days with no facilities. Most visitors will enjoy the views from either Hobas or Ais Ais.
